Kalamazoo College's Ellie Andrews was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 12). In Andrews' first year of college soccer, this is her first MIAA player of the week honor.

The Hornets went 2-1 this week after a 2-0 defeat to No 8 Chicago, a 2-1 win over Kenyon, and a 1-0 victory over Denison. Both wins came on the road and were the first two of the season, improving their record to 2-1-2.

Being listed as a midfielder to begin her college career, Andrews was turned into a defender early this season due to injuries. She responded by playing 230 of the 270 possible minutes from the three games this week. As a result, Andrews and the Hornets' backline only conceded a goal per game while also helping pitch the first shutout of the season. They also fended off 16 corner kick opportunities by not allowing a goal off set pieces.

Offensively, Andrews scored her first collegiate goal in her career for the first goal of the 2-1 win over Kenyon. After Kalamazoo sent a corner kick into the box, Andrews collected the loose ball, volleyed it into the air, and shot it just under the crossbar as time expired in the first half. This goal helped capture the first win for the Hornets this season.

Kalamazoo will continue its five-game road stretch with a visit to Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. on Wednesday (Sept. 14).
