Women's Soccer Shuts Out UW-Oshkosh

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team returned to MacKenzie Field to take on UW-Oshkosh on Friday (Sept. 22). The Hornets scored three goals in the second half to defeat the Tigers 3-0.

"Tonight was a very positive effort after a couple of tough results," said head coach Bryan Goyings. "Our midfield did an excellent job dictating the pace of the game."

Kalamazoo made one change to the starting lineup as Amalia Scorsone joined Elana MitchellMaddie CoffmanEllie AndrewsOlivia DePauliSavera Rajendra-NicolucciAnna MurphyHolly BowlingIzzy KastelRuby Hogan, and Destiny Garcia.

After a first half that featured nine total shots and resulted in a 0-0 tie at the half, the Hornets turned the offense around in the second half. Kalamazoo shot the ball 14 times in the final 45 minutes, had eight on target, and three ended up in the back of the net. Scorsone scored off a corner kick by Andrews to put the Hornets on the board in the 64th minute. Elle Bernas scored off a pass from Coffman in the 69th minute. Murphy scored the final goal on a penalty kick with four seconds left on the clock.

Coach Goyings added, "It was great to see Maddie record an assist on the second goal and Anna finish with a precise penalty kick."

Mitchell ended the game with four saves, Kalamazoo totaled more shots (18-10) and corner kicks (5-1), UW-Oshkosh had more saves (6-4), and the Hornets had more fouls (10-5).

"Our backline did an excellent job limiting their chances and I'm glad they could post a shutout. The MIAA has some powerful teams and no easy games. It will be critical that we diligently prepare as we begin league play," said coach Goyings.

Kalamazoo will stay at MacKenzie Field to open MIAA play against Alma on Tuesday (Sept. 26), beginning at 7 p.m.
