Anna Murphy of the Kalamazoo College women's soccer team was named the SAAC Women's Hornet of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 3).
Kalamazoo opened MIAA play with a home game against Alma on Sept. 27 and a road game at Albion on Sept. 30. The Hornets defeated the Scots 5-1 before tying the Britons 0-0.
Murphy played a stellar defensive midfielder for the Hornets, helping allow just one goal in 180 minutes of play. During that time, Kalamazoo outshot its opponents 40-17, with only nine having a chance to be a goal. The Hornets also played clean games, committing 14 fouls to their opponents' 26. In the win over Alma, Murphy scored her second goal of the season by converting a penalty kick after a Scot foul in the box. So far this season, she has started all 10 matches with two goals and an assist for five points.
A senior from Royal Oak, Mich., Murphy has played in 46 games with 35 starts, scoring four goals and collecting four assists for 12 points. Academically, she was selected for Alpha Lambda Delta in her first year and Chi Alpha Sigma as a junior. Murphy was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team last season and is a three-time MIAA Honor Roll member.
The Hornets will continue conference play with road games at Hope on Wednesday (Oct. 4) and Olivet on Saturday (Oct. 7).
