KALAMAZOO - The Kalamazoo College women's swimming and diving team was narrowly defeated 160-139 by Hope College in the Kalamazoo College Natatorium on Saturday.

Kalamazoo took first place in eight of the 16 events while placing two of the top three in six events.

"I am very proud of both teams today," said Kalamazoo Head Coach Kathy Milliken. "We had a major culture shift today on the women's side. Each and every individual was excited to race and they stepped on the blocks with confidence and channeled their nerves to some really impressive performances.

"As a whole, we defined what it means to be a team today and despite the results, I couldn't be more proud."

Colleen Orwin and Miranda Doepker each one two individual events while Orwin was also on the winning relay.

Kalamazoo's individual event winners were Lauren Seroka (1000 Freestyle - 11:17.76), Colleen Orwin (200 Freestyle - 1:58.57; 200 IM - 2:14.93), Christina Park (100 Backstroke - 1:00.78), Miranda Doepker (200 Butterfly - 2:16.17; 100 Butterfly - :59.65), and Tristyn Edsall (50 Freestyle - :25.20).

The Kalamazoo women opened the meet by winning the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.88 (Park, Varana, Orwin, Edsall).

Kalamazoo returns to action next at the Calvin Invitational in Grand Rapids Dec. 5-7.
