Kalamazoo College's Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman were recognized with All-MIAA honors in women's tennis on Friday, May 4.

Hassevoort, a senior from Kalamazoo (Loy Norrix), was selected as the league's most valuable player while earning All-MIAA First Team honors for the second consecutive year. Hassevoort also earned the Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award, an annual award instituted in 2007 to honor the former long-term women's tennis coach at Adrian College.

Hassevoort had a 7-1 record at No. 1 singles in league play this season while finishing with a career record of 22-9 in league play. She was named MIAA Player of the Week during the second week of this season. Hassevoort also had a 6-2 league record at No. 1 doubles with Paula Silverman while finishing with a career record of 19-8 in doubles.

"Kelsey is one of the best tennis players to ever play for Kalamazoo," said Head Coach Mark Murphy. "Her dedication and commitment to her tennis, her education and Kalamazoo College is never in doubt. These awards are well deserved and indicative of the goals our players strive for."

Silverman, a senior from Ann Arbor (Huron), was selected to the All-MIAA Second Team. Silverman posted a league record of 7-1 at No. 2 singles and finished with a career record of 17-8 in league play. She was 6-2 at No. 1 doubles with Hassevoort and finished with a career record of 15-10 in doubles.

"Paula is one of the best captains I have ever had," Murphy said. "She is a great leader and one of the hardest working student-athletes I have coached. She played No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles last yea and worked very hard to lead this team by moving up to No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. This is a fantastic and well deserved honor."

"I am very proud of Kelsey and Paula on and off the court. They are excellent examples of what great young people can achieve at Kalamazoo College. I can't wait to see what they accomplish next!"
