Kalamazoo College's Sarah Woods won the A Division of the MIAA Flighted Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo on Saturday.

After winning a pair of matches on Friday, Woods won two more singles matches on Saturday to claim the title.

Woods defeated Irene Chen (Albion) 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, and (1) Marissa Cloutier (Albion) 6-3, 6-7(1), 10-5 in the championship match.

"Sarah had a great weekend," said Kalamazoo College coach Mark Murphy. "She defeated three very good MIAA All-Conference players to win the A flight. It was a great way to start her first year. "

Woods also took home the A Division doubles championship with partner Katie Clark. The duo defeated Faller/Sexton (Saint Mary's) 8-3 in the semifinals and Chen/Cloutier (Albion) 8-5 in the championship match.

Other doubles action on Saturday included Cheryl Zhang and Ania Latala falling 8-4 in the semifinals of the B Division. Bageris/Tyburski lost 8-1 in consolations to Boden/Faller (Saint Mary's).

"Overall, I am very pleased with our first weekend of competition," said Murphy. "With very little practice, we showed a lot of potential and started the foundation for a successful 2012-2013 season. "

The women's tennis team is scheduled to compete next at the ITA Regionals in St. Louis Sept. 28 - Oct. 1.
