The Kalamazoo College women's tennis team lost its season opener 5-4 to Ohio Northern University on Saturday in the Markin Center. Ohio Northern (5-0) was ranked No. 14 in the Central Region.
Kalamazoo held a 2-1 lead after wins at one and two doubles, but the Polar Bears came back to win four of the six singles matches to win the match.
Sarah Woods and Olivia Bouchard won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Jenna Riehl and Kelsey Moran won 9-8(6) at No. 2 doubles.
Woods, ranked No. 18 in the Central Region, defeated Michelle Tuma 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Riehl defeated Kristin Cellentani 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
The match against Valparaiso scheduled for Saturday afternoon was cancelled due to weather.
The Hornets (0-1) return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they host Case Western Reserve University.
