Renee Torres of the Kalamazoo College women's tennis team was selected as the MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday (Feb. 27). This is the third time in her career that the senior has collected player of the week honors as she earned the award once in her sophomore and junior seasons.
The women's tennis team earned its first win of the season this past Sunday (Feb. 26) against Augustana. The Hornets defeated the Vikings 5-4 after coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the singles matches.
Torres won her singles and doubles matches to help Kalamazoo complete the comeback. She and her doubles partner Sophie Zhuang started the day with an 8-5 win in the #1 doubles match. Then in the #1 singles match, Torres took care of her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
In her career, Torres is 28-9 (13-1 MIAA) in singles matches and 25-15 (12-2 MIAA) in doubles matches. The senior was selected to the All-MIAA First Team in 2022 after finishing 12-7 (6-1 MIAA) in singles and 12-9 (6-2 MIAA) in doubles. She primarily played #2 singles and #1 doubles in 2022.
Kalamazoo will next host Denison on Sunday (Mar. 5), beginning at 10 a.m.
