Volleyball splits on day two at Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. – Despite losing its first match of the day Saturday morning, the Kalamazoo College volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon against Manchester University.

The Hornets fell to Anderson, 3-1, in the first match of the day but rebounded with a 3-0 sweep against the Spartans.

Match One

Kalamazoo looked poised to bounce back from a tough start to the season on Friday as the Hornets took the first set against Anderson 25-22 Saturday morning. K recorded 13 kills in the first set, committed just one attacking error and had a hitting percentage of .364.

Anderson bounced back, though, taking the next two sets while hitting over .300 in each of them. The Ravens went on to take the final set.

Kaela Van Til recorded a team high 13 kills while Dana DeVito led the team with 21 digs.

Match Two

After a short break between matches, the Hornets bounced back with energy in match two. Kalamazoo built as large as a six point gap in the first game against Manchester and took game one, 25-21.

The Hornets carried their momentum into the final two sets winning 25-18 and 25-22, respectively.

Kalamazoo's attack was balanced throughout the match with four different Hornets recorded five or more kills. Rachel Girard led the way with 11.

DeVito once again led the way defensively with 21 digs and following the conclusion of the tournament was named to the All-Tournament team.

Kalamazoo is set to begin MIAA action this Wednesday, Sept. 7 as the Hornets travel to Olivet for a 7 p.m. match.
