Volleyball edged in MIAA opener at Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team losts its MIAA opener 3-2 at Olivet on Wednesday.

Olivet won the first set 25-21, but Kalamazoo responded with a 28-26 win in the second. The host Comets won the third set easily, 25-12, while the Hornets returned the favor with a 25-11 win in set four.

Kalamazoo opened up the final set with a 5-2 lead, but a 6-2 run by Olivet evened the score at 8-8. The Comets then took an 11-8 lead, but a 4-1 run by the Hornets evened things back up at 12-12 before Olivet scored three straight to clinch the win.

Olivet held a .124 to .105 advantage in hitting percentage, with Kalamazoo outblocking Olivet 10-4. 

Maria Katrantzi led Kalamazoo with 14 kills, 10 digs and five blocks.

Shelby Suseland posted 12 kills and four blocks while Kaela Van Til had 11 kills, 23 digs and three blocks. Rachel Girard added nine kills and 15 digs.

Kaiya Herman-Hilker led the Hornets with 44 assists while Dana DeVito had a team-high 26 digs. Sidney Wall was credited with a team-high six blocks.

Kalamazoo returns to action Friday with its home opener against Albion College at 7 p.m.
