GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team could not secure a win in two matches against Carthage (13-25, 10-25, 14-25) and Concordia-Chicago (15-25, 24-26, 15-25) on Saturday.

Carthage 3, Kalamazoo 0

After falling behind 19-6 in the first set, the Hornets put together a five-point run to try and rally back. However, the Firebirds stopped the momentum and took the first stanza.

Kalamazoo kept pace with Carthage early in the second set, but two big runs by CU put it out of reach.

The battle continued in the third set as the Hornets took a 9-8 lead. However, the Firebirds used another big run to close out the match.

Carthage had a hitting percentage of .240 compared to Kalamazoo's -.024. The Hornets had 17 kills, 16 assists, 29 digs, four blocks, and one ace.

Ann Lawrence gathered the most kills with six on a .333 hitting percentage and added three digs plus an ace.

Jana Molby assisted on 11 points in the match and had three digs.

Morgan Shearer led the team with seven digs.

Concordia-Chicago 3, Kalamazoo 0

The Hornets matched the Cougars point for point in the first set until UCC led 8-7 and used a six-point run to put the set away.

The most significant advantage for Kalamazoo came in the second set when the lead was 13-5 in favor of the Hornets. Unfortunately, Concordia-Chicago battled back to take the set by a slim 26-24 margin.

After going down 13-3 in the final set, the Hornets battled back by scoring 12 of the next 16 points to get within two. However, the Cougars scored the following seven points to take the set and match.

Concordia-Chicago's 37 kills and .092 hitting percentage were enough to take the win. Kalamazoo totaled 19 kills, 19 assists, 45 digs, 10 blocks, and three aces.

Miller had the most kills for the Hornets with four while also posting five digs and a block.

Sara Reathaford led the team with 11 assists and also had six digs.

Johnson filled the stat sheet with 16 digs, three kills, a block, and an ace.

Kalamazoo will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10, with a neutral site match against Oberlin in Olivet, Mich., at 10 a.m.
