Volleyball Wins MIAA Opener at Saint Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team won its MIAA opener in five sets at Saint Mary's Tuesday night, 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 29-27, 15-10.

Kalamazoo won the first set 25-21, but trailed two sets to one after three. The Hornets faced match point twice in the fourth set (24-23 and 27-26), before scoring the final three points to win 29-27 and force a fifth set. The fifth set was tied 9-9 before Kalamazoo scored six of the last seven points to win the set (15-10) and the match.

Saint Mary's hit .165 in the match compared to .149 by Kalamazoo.

Halley Johnson led the Hornets with 13 kills and seven digs. Ann Lawrence had 11 kills with just two errors for a .500 percentage. Charlotte Ruiter also had 11 kills with five block assists.

Jana Molby led the Hornets with 22 assists, while Sara Reathaford had 20 with 11 digs.

Lizzy Rachiele had a team-high 23 digs with three aces. Morgan Shearer had 18 digs.

Kalamazoo plays its first home match of the season next against Defiance College on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
