MacKenzie Wichtman returned to the Kalamazoo area as an assistant coach for the Hornets in February 2024. Wichtman is a Kalamazoo Central High School graduate, where she was a setter and libero for the Maroon Giants from 2013-17.
Most recently, Coach Wichtman has been coaching travel volleyball with 12U-16U athletes since 2017 and was the junior varsity coach at Kalamazoo Central from 2021-23. In 2022, she was named the junior varsity volleyball regional coach of the year with the Maroon Giants. Coach Wichtman also has experience with an internship for the Grand Valley State women's club volleyball team and volunteering coaching with the Western Michigan men's club volleyball team.
Wichtman played high school volleyball at Kalamazoo Central from 2013-17 and recorded her highest number of digs during her junior season. After high school, she attended Grand Valley State and obtained a bachelor's degree in clinical exercise science. Now, Wichtman is attending Western Michigan, where she is on track to graduate with a master's degree in coaching sports performance in the spring of 2024.
Coach Wichtman was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Mich., and currently resides in town with a three-year-old tortoise named Appa and a family dog named named Louie. Wichtman does CrossFit training and plays pick-up volleyball during her spare time, as well as playing beach volleyball and taking hikes on the nearby trails when the weather is nice.
