Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Kalamazoo College women's cross country team took home the Knight-Raider Invitational runner-up plaque Saturday at Calvin College's Gainey Athletic Complex.
Kalamazoo put four runners in the top 20. Senior Rachael Gallap battled a tough pack of runners from Aquinas College and broke all but one in finishing second with a time of 18:51. First-years Paige Anderson and Alison Hankins placed seventh and tenth, respectively, after a tough week of training.
Junior Anna Varitek used the race as a workout to get back on track after not being able to complete the season opener at Wayne State due to adverse effects of the heat. She paced first-year Grace McGlynn to a strong race to round out the scoring, while a strong trio of sophomores, Annalise Bailey, Hannah Schurman and Haleigh Nower, finished close behind. Bailey's 21:19.6 was a personal best for the 5k.
The Hornets are back in action October 2 at the Pre-National meet in Louisville, Ky.
