AUBURNDALE, FLA - The Kalamazoo College baseball team defeated Thomas twice this afternoon in a doubleheader. The team won the first game 2-0, and the second game 11-1.
In the first game The Hornets got the scoring going in the second inning - with Mitchell VanKoevering and Joel Dayton both driving in runs. Those two runs would prove to be all Kalamazoo needed in the first game as the pitching was stellar.
Ryan Orr got the start for the Hornets and went three innings while giving up three hits and no runs. Aaron Schwark also went three innings and gave up two hits and no runs. Then Zach Popovich gave up no runs over the seventh inning to record his third save of the year.
Combined the pitchers gave up five hits and no runs over seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts. Thomas outhit Kalamazoo 5-2 but it didn't matter because of the pitching being there when it had to be.
In the second game Kalamazoo's offense really got going. The Hornets scored all eleven of their runs in the first three innings.
Scott Devine led the way for the Hornets offensively with four RBIs on two hits. Mitchell Vankoevering and Jack Clarck drove in two runs each in the second game while Ben Blomme and Joey Aliotta each also had an RBI
Kalamazoo received excellent support from its pitching staff again with Adam McDowell throwing four scoreless innings in the start. Joe Giacalone gave up one run over two innings and Steve Simmons ended the game with another scoreless inning for the Hornets
Kalamazoo outhit Thomas 9-6 in the second game and each team committed one error. The Hornets move to 7-3 after the wins today and have now won four of their last five games.
The team plays again tomorrow in its last game from Auburndale against Union (N.Y.).
