Turnovers prove costly in Football's 31-17 loss at Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - Despite outgaining the Chicago Maroons 412 yards to 229 yards, the Kalamazoo College football team could not overcome six turnovers, and fell to the Maroons 31-17.

The Maroons struck first using a fumble from Josh Wise. One play after the fumble, Chicago quarterback Vincent Cortina fired a 35-yard strike to Sam Coleman for a touchdown. The point-after failed, and the host Maroons led 6-0 with 10:56 remaining in the first quarter.

Kalamazoo responded with a 12-play, 3:45 minute drive concluding in a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Justin Danzy to junior wide receiver Cameron Shegos. Kalamazoo took its first lead 7-6.

The turnover bug really bit the Hornets in the second quarter. K's next three drives, two of which were over 60 yards, ended in turnovers. Despite the turnovers, K would hold Chicago to just a field goal. Trailing 9-7, a big kickoff return from sophomore running back Elijah Hamilton-Wray set up a 56-yard touchdown drive engineered by Danzy. Kalamazoo took a 14-9 lead into halftime.

After a three and out for K to begin the second half, the Maroons regained the lead on 42-yard touchdown run from Cortina. Things would get worse for the Hornets as Chicago converted a Danzy fumble into another touchdown.

Trailing 24-14, K closed the gap to 24-17 using a 30-yard field goal attempt, but could get no closer. Chicago scored the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter.

Danzy finished 41-62 for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Junior wide out Alex Dietrich caught 10 passes for 88 yards. Shegos tallied seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns.

Kalamazoo finishes non-conference play at 2-2. The Hornets open up Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play at Trine Oct. 5.
