Football comes up short at Adrian, 20-14

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team's comeback effort came up short in a 20-14 loss at Adrian College on Saturday.

The first half was slow offensively as Adrian scored the only points of the half with 41 seconds left in the second quarter on a 48-yard touchdown run, and the Bulldogs missed the extra point.

Adrian scored a pair of touchdowns on plays of 67 and 42 yards midway through the third quarter to take a 20-0 lead.

Kalamazoo got on the board with 42 seconds left in the third quarter when Shon Powell completed an 18-play, 75-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown reception.

The Hornets made it a 20-14 game with 8:59 left in the contest when Elijah Hamilton-Wray scored on a 91-yard touchdown pass from Brock Rucinski.

Kalamazoo's final possession began at midfield with 7:16 remaining and ended with an incomplete pass on fourth down at the Adrian 8-yardline. The host Bulldogs were able to run out the final 5:39 to secure the win.

Neither team turned the ball over in the contest while combining for 19 total punts (Kalamazoo 10, Adrian 9). Adrian accumulated 389 yards of total offense compared to 322 for the Hornets. Adrian held the ball for 36 minutes compared to 24 for Kalamazoo.

Brock Rucinski got the start at quarterback and finished 24-of-52 for 312 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Elijah Hamilton-Wray had six catches for 123 yards including the 91-yard touchdown. Mason Sarosi (47 yards) and Collin Feilla (37 yards) each had four catches. Zak Zagon had 48 yards on two receptions while K.J. Schultz had 36 yards on three catches.

Clay Wilkey led the Hornets in rushing with 25 yards on five carries.

Dylan Zerki led the Kalamazoo defense with 15 total tackles including a sack and three tackles for loss. Jakob Frederick was credited with 13 tackles while BJ Smith, Matt Suter and Joe Piet each had seven.

Kalamazoo returns home for Senior Day next Saturday, Nov. 14 against Hope College at 1 p.m.
