Men's Soccer ends season with 3-0 loss at Calvin

Camilo Cervino playing soccer.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament semifinal game at Calvin. The Hornets season ended where it did last year, falling to the Knights 3-0 at Calvin's Zuidema Field.

Both teams used the full width of the field in the first half. With possession alternating, the host Knights struck first. In the 26th minute, Calvin, who won the MIAA regular season championship for the seventh year in a row, earned a throw deep in Kalamazoo territory. The Travis Vegter throw-in found the head of Sean Broekhuizen who flicked the ball past Kalamazoo junior goalkeeper Beay Prey.

After assisting on the first goal of the game, Vegter would find the net himself in the 41st minute. The Hudsonville native beat two Hornet defenders and blasted a shot past prey.

Kalamazoo, though trailed 2-0 at halftime, fired seven shots in the first half while earning a corner kick in the process.

Calvin would add another goal midway through the second half. Kalamazoo's best chance of the game came with 19 minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman Nicholas Shabino flicked a ball over the Knight back line toward freshman Camilo Cervino. The Colombia native took one touch and fired a shot from 10 yards out. Calvin goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty made the save, flicking the shot over the crossbar.

Kalamazoo could not break the Calvin back line again.

The Hornets fired 15 shots in the contest compared to 18 for Calvin. Cervino led the way with four shots. Two of them were on target. K held a slight 5-4 advantage on corner kicks. Beau Prey took the loss making five saves in just over 72 minutes of play.

Seniors Sean Chetcuti and Mike Paule-Carres played their final games as members of the men's soccer program.
