KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team competed in the first day of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships.
In the main draw singles, Bo Hudson won two matches including an upset of 28th-seeded Gordon Zhang of Chicago 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Hudson will play in the round of 32 against Pete Dakich of Kenyon at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, Sept. 28.
Branden Metzler, seeded 16th, won his first two matches without giving up more than one game in any set. He will face No. 19 Grant Veltman of Denison at 9:30 a.m.
Peter Rothstein, seeded 13th, won his first round match 6-4, 6-4 over Graham McMullen of Wabash, but fell to Jack Ventura-Cruess 6-3 in the round of 64.
Alan Faber also won his first round match 6-3, 6-0 over Hope's Cody Herbruck. Faber fell to John Carswell of Washington U. in the round of 64.
Mike Korn won his match 6-1, 6-1 over Sam Prewitt of Ohio Northern. Korn met his match in the second round falling to No. 2 Ryan Kreis of Wheaton (Ill.).
A trio of Hornets fell in first round matches. Spencer Navarre fell to Jake Daseke of DePauw (Ind.) 6-0, 7-6(4) in the first round. Max Manley lost 6-2, 6-2 to Tyler Kratky of Washington U. Jeremy DePree lost in straight sets to Kenyon's Nick Fiaschetti.
In doubles, Korn and Hudson won 8-2 over Capital in the round of 64, but fell to No. 5 Denison 8-6 in the round of 32. DePree and Faber also won in round one, but met the same fate in the round of 32.
Navarre and Manley fell to the top-seeded doubles team from Wheaton (Ill.) 8-2. Metzler and Rothstein lost to a DePauw (Ind.) team 9-7 in the round of 64.
In the Kalamazoo Collegiate singles division, Eric De Witt and Alberto Ayala both won matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0 and will play Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m.
Jacob Scott was defeated by Louie Stuerke of Case Western 7-6(2), 6-2.
The Hornets two doubles teams in the doubles division fell in the round of 32.
