KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 9-0 win over Calvin on Wednesday.

Kalamazoo got off to a slow start in doubles, but managed to win all three flights. Senior Peter Rothstein and freshman Branden Metzler won first doubles handily 8-3 over Matt Buesing and John Strikwerda.

Senior Alan Faber and junior David DeSimone won a tight second doubles match 8-6 while senior Mike Korn and freshman Alberto Ayala won 9-7 at third doubles.

Kalamazoo clinched the match with victories at first and second singles. Metzler won 6-1, 6-1 at first singles and Rothstein defeated Tom Griffin 6-0, 6-1 at second singles.

Freshmen Spencer Navarre and Eric DeWitt won at fifth and sixth singles respectively.

The closest flight of the match was at fourth singles. DeSimone battled back from a 4-1 deficit to win the first set in a tiebreak. The Bettendorf native won the second set 7-5.

Kalamazoo avenged a loss to Calvin last season. With the victory, K improves to 7-5 on the season and 3-0 in MIAA play. The Hornets are yet to drop a flight in conference play having swept Adrian and Trine before beating Calvin Wednesday.

Kalamazoo will play again April 5 at Albion for a match slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
