Softball bats stay hot at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With weather only allowing the Kalamazoo College softball team to complete one full game Wednesday afternoon at Cornerstone University, the Hornets made the best of their day coming away with an 8-1 win over the Golden Eagles.

Like last Saturday, Kalamazoo got itself out to an early lead Wednesday afternoon scoring three runs in the top of the first much in part due to a two-run home run from Nori Seita.

Cornerstone countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the first, but starting pitcher Victoria Najacht settled in for the Hornets the rest of the way.

Najacht surrendered just the one run on five hits on her way to a complete game win.

Holding just a 3-1 lead heading to the fifth inning, Kalamazoo tacked on another run courtesy of an Angelia Evangelista RBI single, but it wasn't until the sixth inning when Kalamazoo blew the game open.

With the bases loaded and Evangelista getting hit by a pitch to drive in another run, Erin DuRoss drove a double down the leftfield line clearing the bases.

DuRoss led the Hornets offensively going 3-for-4 with the three RBIs.

Evangelista and Seita also recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece on the day.

The two teams played three innings of game two of the doubleheader but the game was called before taking the field for the fourth.

Kalamazoo will head back home for a doubleheader with Chicago on April 1. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
