KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team fell to Hope 2-0 on senior day, Nov. 2.
"There were moments that we played well," Kalamazoo Head Coach Bryan Goyings said in a post-game interview. "We have struggled with consistency on offense. That showed in this game."
Hope, which came into the game in a tie for first place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), waiting just over three minutes to score. The Flying Dutch earned a corner kick in the fourth minute. The Maria DeShaw kick found the head of Yewah who beat Kalamazoo goalkeeper Lucy Mailing.
The back-breaking goal came with just over a minute to play in the first half. Kristin Hazlett finished a Lindsey Bieri cross. The Hornets went into halftime trailing 2-0.
K outshot Hope 7-2 in the second half, but could not beat the Flying Dutch defense.
"We played a strong second half," Goyings said. "We just couldn't put one in."
Freshmen Elizabeth Clevenger and Paige Sambor each took three shots in the contest.
"We try to be dangerous on set pieces," said Goyings. "Paige [Sambor] got a head on several crosses. She just missed target. We also rely on Elizabeth [Clevenger] to create offense."
Kalamazoo outshot Hope 11-8 in the game. Both teams earned five corner kicks.
The Hornets will play their final game of the season Nov. 4 against Alma.
