Hornets shutout Aurora 1-0

The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team earned a big win on Sunday in its final game of the Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic as it defeated host school Aurora University 1-0. The Hornets survived their weekend in Aurora unscathed and now return home undefeated with a record of 2-0.

"They are a very good team and to open the season with two strong results is an excellent way to start," said head coach Bryan Goyings.

Both teams went scoreless in the first half with very little shots coming from either side. In the second half sophomore Paige Sambor broke the tie with a goal in the 73rd minute. The Hornets were able to hold onto the lead and the win after a huge save by junior goalkeeper Lucy Mailing with less than five minutes left in the game.

"Aurora was one v keeper and Lucy made the save and preserved the shutout and win," Goyings said.

Aurora has won eight consecutive Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference titles and is the preseason favorite to win a ninth this season. The Spartans also received votes to be included in the preseason top 25 poll and were right on the brink of being a ranked team. All this makes the win even more impactful for the Hornets, especially this early in their season.

The Hornets next game will be Friday night, Sept. 5 at home against Transylvania University where they'll try to build on this win streak and keep their undefeated season alive.
