Volleyball ends season with 3-0 loss at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Calvin College by scores of 25-11, 25-14 The Hornets finish the 2013 season with a 13-15 mark including a 7-9 record in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

"We had goals of finishing in the top four in the conference," Kalamazoo Head Coach Jeanne Hess said. "We fell a win or two short of our goal, but we have good things to take from this season. We will continue to get better."

Kalamazoo started out the match with kills from senior right side Quinn McCormick and sophomore outside hitter Nya Greenstone. Leading 2-1, Calvin won six straight points to take a 7-2 lead. The Hornets would get as close as four points, but could get no closer.

In set two, the host Knights won the first three points. K responded by winning the next four points using two kills from McCormick and a solo block from the Kalamazoo native.

Calvin answered winning the six points and continuing the put the pressure on. A service run from Laura Danhoff put the score at 20-8, sealing the second set victory for the Knights.

The third set was similar to the second. Calvin jumped out to a 10-4 lead and won the final and decisive set.

McCormick led the way for K with seven kills and three blocks. Her along with Jessie Owens and Brittany Amor played their final matches in a Hornets uniform.

"All three seniors improved from the moment they set foot on campus as well as through this season," said Hess. "They will surely be missed."

As a team, Kalamazoo hit a .021 clip compared to .314 for Calvin. Kalamazoo also recorded four blocks on one of the nation's top front rows.

"Calvin came out to play tonight," Hess said. "Give them credit for the win tonight."

Kalamazoo finished seventh in the MIAA last season. This year, the Hornets finished in a tie for fifth place.
