Women's Cross Country finishes 8th at MIAA Jamboree

Lauren Arquette running cross country.

The Kalamazoo College women's cross country team finished in eighth overall at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree held at the West Ottawa Golf Club in Holland, Mich. Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets ended the day with 214 team points, 17 ahead of ninth place Adrian and nine points shy of seventh place Olivet.

"We were thrilled with the way the women attacked the course together on what turned out to be a pretty muggy morning," Kalamazoo Head Coach Kristopher Koster said. "Up and down the line, the women focused so well on following our race plan to pack it up in pairs and trios of runners of similar abilities, pushing each other for as long as they could possibly stick together."

Leading the way for Kalamazoo was freshman Lauren Arquette who finished fourth overall with a time of 22:10.

Anna Roodbergen recorded the Hornets only other top 50 finish, with a time of 26:15 and a place of 47.

Cheyenn Allyn-White, Sophie Roberts and Mira Swearer rounded out the Hornets' top five.

Kalamazoo will travel to the Lansing Invitatitonal on Oct. 9 for its next meet.

Coach's Notes

-Our eighth-place finish was our best team result at an MIAA meet since the 2013 MIAA Championship Meet, also run at West Ottawa Golf Club.

-We scored 27 fewer points than at last year's MIAA Jamboree, and the average time for our top five was 2:35 faster than a year ago.

-Lauren Arquette's fourth-place finish represented the highest placing by a Hornet at an MIAA meet since Allison Iott won the 2008 MIAA Championship Meet. Lauren was the top freshman in the meet.

-Seniors Mira Swearer and Margot Couraud earned lifetime personal records (PRs) for the second meet in a row, Mira slashing 30 seconds from her previous best and Margot breaking both the 29:00 and 28:00 barriers for the first time ever.

-Swearer, Anna Roodbergen, and Kathryn Thamann all passed the 5km mark--with another kilometer to run--faster than their final 5km times from our first meet of the season two weeks ago.

-Couraud ran 2:43 faster than the last time we raced on this course, in the 2013 MIAA Championship Meet; Julia Hulbert ran 2:23 faster than she did in 2013 on this course.

-Sophie Roberts ran the fifth-fastest 6km of her career in her 2015 debut.
