Catching Up With Our Competing Sports

Baseball
The Hornets continued MIAA play with a three-game series at Calvin on Apr. 5-6. Kalamazoo took the series by winning the first game 3-0 and the third game 5-2 while dropping the second game 7-3. Lukas Bolton (four hits, one walk), David Stechow (four hits, one walk), Logan Lockhart (three hits, two walks), Tanner Hawkins (three hits, two walks), and Ryar Rinehart (three hits, two walks) were all on base five times while Cooper Mills (one hit, six walks) was on base seven times. Overall, the pitching staff had a 2.77 ERA and allowed nine runs (eight earned) on a .224 batting average against with 23 strikeouts. Jacob Davis threw a complete game shutout in game one and set a new single-game record with just three hits allowed in a nine-inning game. Kalamazoo will continue conference play with road and home midweek games against Hope on Monday (Apr. 8) and Wednesday (Apr. 10) before playing Adrian in a three-game series with a home game on Friday (Apr. 12) and a road doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 13).

Women's Golf
Kalamazoo last participated in the Trine Spring Invite on Mar. 29 and finished 15th with a team score of 419. Jillian Smith scored the best for the Hornets, shooting an 84 for a 19th-place finish. Sydney Pickell shot a 90, Gretchen Wilson shot a 103, and Emma Becker rounded out the scoring with a 142. The Hornets will continue their spring season with a make-up MIAA Jamboree from the fall at Trine on Friday (Apr. 11). The Hornets will also host the Steven Tyler Memorial early next week on Monday (Apr. 15) at The Moors Golf Course.

Men's Lacrosse
The Hornets continued their season with a road MIAA opener at Alma on Apr. 6. Kalamazoo defeated the Scots 17-4 to get back to a .500 record on the season. Cam VanGalder led the offense with five goals and an assist, while Logan Gillis scored a goal and collected three assists. Jake Asnis put away three goals, while Ryan Warezak, Ronin Honda, and Mitchel VanGalder collected a goal and an assist each. Lukas Graff led the defense with six ground balls, Jack Bungart finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Colby Skinner caused three turnovers. Sam Hughes was 10-12 in the faceoff circle with five ground balls. Dylan Wickey, Eric Paternoster, Tony Valade, and Larson Makie combined for 14 saves in the cage. Kalamazoo will continue conference play with a home game against Albion on Tuesday (Apr. 9) and a road game at Calvin on Saturday (Apr. 13). 


Women's Lacrosse
Kalamazoo began MIAA play with a road game at Alma on Apr. 6. The Hornets gained their sixth consecutive win after defeating the Scots 17-11. Tessa Fuller collected the most points with four goals, four assists, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. Fuller also broke the single-season assist record and has 23 this season. Hannah Heeren was the leading scorer with seven goals, collecting 16 draw controls, three ground balls, and a caused turnover. Sophie Hartl finished with two goals, two assists, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers, while Ella Spooner scored four goals. Jordan Flink improved to 5-0 with six saves. The Hornets continue conference play with a road game at Alma on Wednesday (Apr. 10) and a home game against Hope on Saturday (Apr. 13).


Softball
The Hornets began conference play with a doubleheader against #1 Trine and dropped both games to the Thunder 4-1 and 8-0. Lizzy Rottenberk got on base three times with two hits and a walk with a stolen base, while Jordan Wesaw finished with two hits, a double, and an RBI. Maddy Vrba started the first game in the circle and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. Kalamazoo will have four doubleheaders this week at Calvin on Tuesday (Apr. 9), against Wheaton on Thursday (Apr. 11), at Saint Mary's on Saturday (Apr. 13), and against North Park on Sunday (Apr. 14). 

Men's Tennis
Kalamazoo got conference play going with three matches against Calvin on Apr. 3, Alma on Apr. 5, and Adrian on Apr. 6. The Hornets fell in a close match to the Knights 5-4 before rebounding and defeating the Scots 9-0 and the Bulldogs 8-1. Gabe Vidinas was 6-0 on the week with three wins in the #1 singles and #1 doubles matches. Alex Fleming was Vidinas' doubles partner and also went 6-0 with three wins in #3 singles and #1 doubles matches. Adnan Alousi and newcomer Julian Bilbao were 5-1 on the week, with three #2 doubles wins as partners and two singles wins each. The Hornets will continue conference play with a single home match against Albion on Friday (Apr. 12).

Women's Tennis
The Hornets continued MIAA play with two home matches against Calvin on Apr. 2 and Adrian on Apr. 6 before heading to Alma on Apr. 7. Kalamazoo fell to the Knights 5-4 before rebounding to be the Bulldogs 6-3 and the Scots 8-1. Juliana Pullen was 5-1 with three wins in #1 singles and two more in #1 doubles with Maddie Hurley, who also had two wins in #2 singles. Ivy Walker had four wins on the week, with two coming with Olivia Wolfe in the #2 doubles and the other two in the #4/5 singles. Kalamazoo will continue MIAA play with two road matches at Saint Mary's on Saturday (Apr. 13) and Olivet on Sunday (Apr. 14).
