The 2020 Kalamazoo College men's lacrosse season came to an abrupt and unexpected end on Friday, March 13 when the MIAA President's Council canceled the spring seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hornets finished the season at 4-1 overall and were just one win away from tying the school record of five.
During the abbreviated season, the 2020 men's lacrosse team had no shortage of accomplishments as the team set new school records in shots with 59 against Taylor University, face-offs won with 21 at Concordia-Mich., and ground balls with 78 against Northland. Kalamazoo also had four of the top 12 scoring games in school history this season as it scored a season-best 18 goals in the win over Taylor.
"The 2020 season was off to a promising start," said coach Vince Redko. "We showed resiliency within games and were competing for a full 60 minutes against each opponent. Statistically, we were on track to improve in nearly every important category. We took a big step forward in all phases of the game."
Junior Jack Smith led the Hornets with 25 points on 14 goals and 11 assists. Last year's goals leader Dylan McGorisk led the way in the scoring column again with 15 goals in the team's five games and was on pace to break his own school record of 40 goals in one season. Brandon Wright and Jack Loveland also reached double-digit goals as the duo scored 11 and 10, respectively.
Seniors Harrison Ramsey and Doug Shipp both played vital roles for Kalamazoo as they combined for 13 points during the season. Fellow senior Nate Silverman started all five games in goal while playing 250 of the team's 300 minutes this year. He made 39 saves while allowing 11.72 goals per game.
"We will graduate a group that played a ton of minutes over the course of their careers. They have provided excellent leadership through the nascent years of our program. We are indebted to them for helping to establish our culture, carrying that torch through some dark days. But the future is bright, with an awesome core returning next year, including our top six scorers and three of our starting longsticks."
"Our team is continuing to build on the progress made during the beginning of this season from afar," added Redko. "We are excited to take the field again in 2021!"
