Men's Soccer Falls at No. 8 Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a battle of two teams atop the MIAA standings, the Kalamazoo College men's soccer team fell in overtime 2-1 to Calvin Tuesday night at Zuidema Field.

Calvin, ranked No. 8 in the latest d3soccer.com poll and No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, scored in the 97th minute to improve to 5-0 in the conference.

Kalamazoo, which falls to 9-3-2 overall and 4-1-0 in the MIAA, grabbed an early lead when Emilio Romo found the back of the Calvin net in the 18th minute. Romo led the Hornets with seven shots on the evening and has a team-high eight goals on the season.

After Calvin knotted the score in the 61st minute, neither team could pull ahead in regulation. The Knights then scored at the 96:47 mark to put the game away in the first overtime.

The game was remarkably even, with K holding advantages in shots (18-16) and saves (6-5), while Calvin outpaced the Hornets in shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (11-4).

Next up for the Hornets is a road contest Saturday vs. Olivet. The 12 p.m. game will be played at Olivet High School.
