GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College softball team split a doubleheader at Calvin University on Tuesday. After dropping the opener 11-3, Kalamazoo won the second game 1-0.
Game One
Calvin took advantage of a nine-run third inning to beat Kalamazoo 11-3 in the opener.
After scoring two in the bottom of the first, Calvin scored nine in the third, including four unearned, to take an 11-0 lead. Kalamazoo got on the board in the top of the fourth on Emma Newlove's two-run home run. The Hornets added a run in the fifth on Jordan Wesaw's RBI double but it wasn't enough to keep the game going as the Hornets next two batters were retired, ending the game with the eight-run rule.
Jordan Wesaw finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Emma Newlove drove in two runs with the home run. Cecilia Schihl also had a hit in the game.
Game Two
After a scoreless first five innings, Kalamazoo scored the game's only run in the bottom of the sixth when Bella Caza was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Landrie Fridsma who led off the inning with a single.
Jordan Cook went the distance for the shutout, scattering five hits while striking out four and walking three.
Landrie Fridsma finished 2-for-3 with the one run scored. Jordan Wesaw also singled in the sixth. Brynna Garden's double was Kalamazoo's other hit in the game.
