Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Saint Mary's

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College softball team was on the short end of both games of a doubleheader at Saint Mary's College on Saturday, falling 2-0 in the opener and 5-4 in eight innings in game two.

Game One

Saint Mary's scored one run in the fourth and one in the sixth to beat Kalamazoo 2-0 in the opener.

Kalamazoo outhit Saint Mary's 6-4 in the game, but the Hornets left nine runners on base as they failed to score.

Landrie Fridsma and Jordan Wesaw each had two hits in the game. Emma Newlove had a double. Lizzy Rottenberk had the other hit for Kalamazoo.

Maddy Vrba struck out four, walked four, and gave up four hits, while allowing one earned run.

Game Two

After falling behind in the top of the first, Kalamazoo scored two runs in the bottom half on Landrie Fridsma's double and a single by Emma Newlove. Kalamazoo went up 4-1 with two more runs in the bottom of the second, one on a fielding error and the second on a passed ball. The Hornets led 4-2 after three innings before Saint Mary's scored a pair of runs int he fifth to tie the score. After a scoreless sixth and seventh innings, Saint Mary's took advantage of a throwing error and pushed a run across. Kalamazoo's leadoff batter walked in the bottom of the eighth, but a double play followed by a groundout ended the game 5-4 in favor of the Belles.

Saint Mary's had 12 hits in the game compared to seven by Kalamazoo.

Emma Newlove finished with two hits, a walk and an RBI.

Landrie Fridsma had a double and an RBI.

Jordan Cook struck out one in 4.2 innings in the start. Jordan Wesaw struck out one in the final 3.1 innings.
