Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Birmingham Southern

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Kalamazoo College women's lacrosse team defeated Birmingham Southern University 19-18 Tuesday afternoon at Sewanee.

Kalamazoo scored first but trailed 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets scored five unanswered to start the second quarter and take an 8-7 lead. Birmingham Southern scored with 1:11 left to make it 8-8 heading into halftime.

The teams went back-and-forth scoring before going on three-goal runs in the third. Kalamazoo eventually scored the last two to make it 16-16 at the end of three.

Kalamazoo pulled ahead early in the fourth and led 19-17 with 1:15 left to play. Birmingham Southern scored with 54 seconds left to make it a one-goal game. Their final shot attempt went with 31 seconds left went high.

Birmingham Southern outshot Kalamazoo 41-39 overall, but the Hornets held a 33-32 edge in shots on goal. Kalamazoo held a 21-20 edge in draw controls and 31-30 on ground balls.

Abbie Caza led the Hornets with six goals in the game.

Ella Spooner scored four goals with an assist and eight draw controls.

Hannah Heeren scored three goals with two assists and five draw controls.

Eden Schnurstein added three goals.

Jordan Doyle led the team with eight ground balls. Sophie Hartl had five draw controls and four ground balls. Jordan Flink made 14 saves in goal.

The Hornets are back in action Thursday when they play at Sewanee at 6 p.m.
