GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team continued MIAA play by traveling to #16 Calvin on Wednesday (Oct. 18). The Hornets' win streak was snapped by the nationally-ranked Knights by a score of 2-0.
The starting lineup stayed the same for the fourth straight game with Elana Mitchell, Maddie Coffman, Olivia DePauli, Savera Rajendra-Nicolucci, Anna Murphy, Holly Bowling, Izzy Kastel, Ruby Hogan, Erin Somsel, Destiny Garcia, and Amalia Scorsone.
Kalamazoo spent most of the first half on the defensive end as Calvin outshot the Hornets 11-1. However, Kalamazoo kept the Knights off the scoreboard as only three of Calvin's shots were on target, and Mitchell made all three saves. The score was scoreless heading into halftime.
The Knights shot the ball 10 times in the first 20 minutes of the second half, with the 10th giving them a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute. This goal snapped Kalamazoo's scoreless streak of 350 consecutive minutes, dating back to the game against Hope on Oct. 4. Calvin scored its other goal about seven minutes later to double the lead. The Hornets got all four of their second-half shots off after those two goals but could not find the back of the net.
Mitchell made five saves on seven opportunities. Calvin totaled more shots (24-5) and corner kicks (12-1), while Kalamazoo finished with more saves (5-2), and both teams had nine fouls each.
Kalamazoo will finish the regular season and MIAA play by hosting Adrian at MacKenzie Field on Saturday (Oct. 21), beginning at 5 p.m.
