ALBION, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's soccer team traveled back to Albion for the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 28). The Britons took full advantage of their two penalty kicks, defeating the Hornets 2-1.
Kalamazoo inserted Michele Alia into the starting lineup with Gavin Houtkooper, Shun Yonehara, Aidan Gillig, Paul Kearis, Luke Bormann, Emilio Romo, Chad Ewing, Lucas Ruiz, Jeremiah Heath, and Junior Matuza.
The Hornets came out on the offensive attack in the first period, outshooting the Britons 7-3 in the first half. Unfortunately, Kalamazoo committed a foul in the box that Albion converted on to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Then, another penalty kick was awarded in the 68th minute to give the Britons a 2-0 advantage. The Hornets scored a goal in the 87th minute, as Plumstead scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season, with the assist going to Romo.
Houtkooper made two saves on four opportunities. The Hornets had more shots (21-10), corner kicks (9-1) and fouls (14-12), while the Britons had more saves (9-3).
Kalamazoo finished the season with a 7-9-2 record, including going 2-3-2 in MIAA play.
