Women's Basketball Defeats Saint Mary's

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College women's basketball team defeated Saint Mary's College 80-70 at home on Saturday. 

Kalamazoo never trailed in the contest and led 15-3 at the end of the first quarter. Saint Mary's outscored Kalamazoo 21-19 in the second quarter but still trailed 34-24 at halftime.

Kalamazoo outscored Saint Mary's 28-19 in the third to take a 62-43 lead into the fourth. The Hornets led by as many as 21 (67-46) with 7:09 remaining. The Belles cut the deficit to 10 with 30 seconds remaining but were unable to get any closer in the defeat.

Kalamazoo shot 42.6 percent overall while holding Saint Mary's to 30.4 percent. Kalamazoo made 7-of-21 three-pointers compared to 2-of-19 by Saint Mary's. The Hornets also sank 21-of-24 free throws compared to 20-of-36 by the Belles.

All five Kalamazoo starters scored in double figures. Jordan Wesaw recorded her second career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals, one assist and one blocked shot.

Sara English scored 15 points with five rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Jackie Brines scored 15 points with three rebounds and two assists. 

Kaelyn Arlington finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Ruby Hogan scored 11 points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Taylor Dinda added eight points off the bench with five rebounds and two assists.

Kalamazoo is back in action at home next Wednesday, Feb. 7, when the Hornets host Hope at 7 p.m.
