Ivy Walker of the Kalamazoo College women's tennis team was selected as the MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday (Apr. 17). This is the first time in her career that the sophomore has collected player of the week honors.
The Hornets played an exhibition match against Olivet (Apr. 12) before hosting Hope (Apr. 15) in MIAA action. Kalamazoo defeated the Comets in the exhibition 9-0 and then took down the Flying Dutch for the first time since 2014, 5-4.
In the match against Hope, all three doubles teams fell as the Flying Dutch went up 3-0. However, the Hornets came storming back with the help of Walker. After Kalamazoo tied the match up 4-4, Walker locked into a battle in the #6 singles. She took both sets 7-6, winning the first tiebreaker points 7-3 and the second 7-5.
In her two seasons, Walker is 9-7 (4-2 MIAA) in singles matches while primarily playing in the sixth spot. She is also 6-9 (3-2 MIAA) in doubles matches, mainly competing in the third spot.
Kalamazoo will wrap up the regular season with an opportunity to claim sole possession of the MIAA regular season title at Trine on Saturday (Apr. 22).
