NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College volleyball team was defeated in four sets at Saint Mary's College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play on Friday.
After winning set one 29-27, the Hornets dropped three straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-17.
Senior right side Quinn McCormick led K offensively with 14 kills while hitting a .345 clip. Junior middle hitter notched 13 kills.
Kalamazoo's offense was again quarterbacked by junior setter Alex Gothard. The Bloomfield Hills native dished out 45 assists while recording 15 digs and three blocks.
"Alex [Gothard] distributed the ball all around tonight," Kalamazoo Head Coach Jeanne Hess said. "She also played a stellar defensive match."
For the fourth time in her career, freshman libero Logan Horejsi notched at least 30 digs in a match. The White Lake native dug up 30 balls.
As a team, Kalamazoo hit a .167 clip while Saint Mary's hit .207 for the match.
Three Belles, Kati Schneider, Katie Hecklinski, and Melanie Kuczek reached double-digits in kills.
Perhaps the match clincher was serve and serve receive. Saint Mary's recorded 13 aces compared to just three for K.
"We were out of system too often tonight," said Hess. "I give credit to Saint Mary's for that as well playing great defense."
Kalamazoo returns to action Saturday, Oct. 5. The Hornets will play MIAA foe Adrian at noon followed by Finlandia University at 4:00 p.m.
