SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In another grind-it-out down to the wire game for the Kalamazoo College men's basketball team, the Hornets came up just short as they fell to Schreiner University, 80-76, in the first of two games at the Trinity Invitational.

The Hornets started out the game shooting the ball well and playing stifling defense as they jumped out to an 18-5 lead at the 10:40 mark of the first half.

Down the stretch of the first half, though, Schreiner went on a strong 13-3 run tying the game at 31-31 at halftime.

Different from the first half, both teams traded leads multiple times throughout the early part of the second half of play.

With the Hornets leading by one at the 11:18 mark in the second half, Schreiner went on a 9-0 over the next minute and a half of play and never surrender the lead the rest of the way.

Kalamazoo found themselves within just two points four times in the final 7:36 of play but the Hornets were never able to make the breakthrough and take the lead.

Chase Baysdell scored a game-high and season-high 27 points in the loss while Adam Dykema and Demarco Dickerson each scored double figures with 15 and 10, respectively.

Jake Whitney, Josh Miller, Baysdell and Dickerson each ended the game with five rebounds apiece.

Schreiner shot 49 percent from the field while the Hornets shot 40 percent.

Kalamazoo will look to come away from the Trinity Invitational 1-1 when they take on the host school tomorrow evening at 8 p.m.
