Men's Lacrosse Wins in Double Overtime

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College men's lacrosse team defeated Benedictine University (Ill.) 10-9 in double overtime Wednesday night at MacKenzie Field.

Kalamazoo led 2-0 five minutes into the contest and led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Each team scored twice in the second quarter giving Kalamazoo a 5-3 advantage at halftime.

The visiting Eagles made it 5-4 early in the third only to see Kalamazoo respond 26 seconds later making it 6-4. Neither team scored in the final 12 minutes of the third.

Benedictine would get within one goal three times in the fourth as Kalamazoo responded with a goal each time. Benedictine's fourth goal of the quarter came with 2:17 remaining, making it 9-8 Kalamazoo. The Hornets were unable to respond this time, and Benedictine tied it up with a goal with one-tenth of a second left in regulation.

Neither team scored in the first four-minute overtime period. The Hornets withstood five shots by Benedictine in the final 1:27, including a blocked shot and two saves in the final 44 seconds.

Benedictine turned the ball over early in the second overtime. Following a Kalamazoo timeout, the Hornets set up and ended the game with a goal by Ronin Honda with 3:02 left on the clock. 

Benedictine outshot Kalamazoo 46-42 overall in the game, but Kalamazoo had 30 shots on goal to Benedictine's 22. Kalamazoo held a 45-36 advantage in ground balls. Benedictine won 12 of the 23 faceoffs.

Ronin Honda led the Hornets with three goals and an assist while totaling four ground balls.

Jake Asnis had two goals, an assist and three ground balls.

Ryan Warezak had two goals with five ground balls.

Vincent Tremonti was credited with three assists.

Jack Jesko led the team with six ground balls. Colby Skinner had five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Dylan Wickey made 13 saves in goal.

Kalamazoo returns to action March 18 at Augustana (Ill.).
